Relate Project Blog

Tuesday was the first day when we had a chance to meet with the researchers who work on the project that we have to study carefully. I have the opportunity to have an insight to the life and work of the biogenetic lab. They do various researches in Casaccia, both government and EU founded projects. In the ReLaTe Project we focus on SAFENUT project. This is a 3 year period long project, which is ending in this year. The aim of the project is to map and preserve the genetic stock on almond and hazelnut.

It’s maybe not the most sexy and presentable research in genetics (like Dolly the cloned sheep) but as one of the head researcher was pointed out: almost one third of the almond and haselnut genetic varieties are dangered to disappear. We use them in big amounts in food and cosmetics industries, but with very specific standards, that some of the varieties are already disappeared. However we have gene banks all over the world, it’s still not well organised and syncronised with each other. The project have many objectives, some of them is interesting purely from a biological point of view, and some are from economical and cultural. 6 country’s 11 partners working around the clock to finish the project. Today was just the first day, and we are still searching for some angles to find the right topic to the final article. We got a great amount of written material to se as background informations, we’ll have time in the evening to study them.

On a subjective level I’m still ill, sneezing all the time. My great lab partner the Croatian Natasa is trying to say ‘egészségedre’ (bless you) in hungarian, with quite a success at the end of the day. Actually I consider myself lucky because with a person, who has similar thinking, but different professional background it’s very useful to discuss you ideas, doubts and questions. At the late afternoon, when we managed to get back to Rome from Casaccia, we had a quick tour in the city, while we had sunlight to make some pictures, before the dark. After that we had a nice walk from Colosseo to the Repubblica square to Termini and back to the Colosseo in a different line.

After arriving to the airport yesterday evening I managed to meet with the other participants who arrived before me, and the project coordinator Hinano. I am glad that I decided to choose the taxi, because I felt a little ill by the end of the day. After a few hours sleep we started our first day on Casaccia. Monday was just an introduction to the life of the ENEA researchers. The first challenge is to get through the security which is very tight by the way, we had to check in with passports, they registered our equipments (cameras, laptops). We almost felt like we’re travelled back like 20 years or so, into a real spy movie. (Specially because we have very strict rules for taking pictures on the territory.)

After arriving we had a tour. We were lucky to visit 3 main research facilities: one of ENEA’s proudest research, the Thermodynamic Solar Plant, where we were guided by Mr. Fabrizi, who filled us in on the contemporary energy efficient solar energy research’s world. After that we visited the Sismic and Dinamic Tests Hall, which is used for testing and modeling earthquakes and building movements by the help of a “shaking table” (which is actually is the coolest device I saw), and later where the video recordings are analysed and recreated as a mockup for further study. The third part of the tour was the “Semi-Anecoich” Chamber which used to study electromagnetic waves and effects.

After the introduction-tour we have our first experience with italian cuisine and the very traditional way of quickly having a small, but strong espresso. The rest of the day was spent in the news room, viewing some ground rules, the ReLaTe project itself. Talking about the topic: ‘how should a good science journalist communicate science’ is generated a fascinating discussion about bad journalism and the wrong ways and experiences that how its usually done.

Kis késéssel indult a gép Ferihegyről, és a szeles időjárásnak köszönhetően izgalmas utunk volt a római Fiumicino reptérre. A csomagokra elég sokat kellett várni, így fél órás taxizás után este fél 10 körül sikerült megérkezni a szállásra. A vacsorát és az ismerkedést így sajnos lekéstem, bár a késői járat miatt ez várható volt. A 8 római résztvevőből azonban ketten ekkor még mindig úton voltak.

A szállásra nem lehet panasz, egy teljes apartmant kaptunk fejenként, egész hétre fizetve van a wifi hozzáférés is. Egész kellemes idő van, este későig még nyitva lehetett hagyni az erkélyt. Éjjel esett, a helyieket ez meglehetősen frusztrálja, mert ahogy mondják, nincsenek hozzászokva ennyi csapadékhoz.

A társaság elég vegyes, egy spanyol, egy török egy svéd és egy horvát lány, valamint mégegy magyar van, illetve egy német és egy angol fiú. Még este sikerült megismerkednem velük, és a projekt vezetőjével, aki ma már utazik is tovább Barcelonába, mert a következő turnus ott kezdi meg a programot. Egy rövid alvás után korai reggeli után elindulunk nemsokára az ENEA Casaccia Kutatóközpontjába, Róma külső részére.

Ez a tematikus blog azért jött létre, mert március elején lehetőségem lesz egy hetet Rómában a ENEA-ban (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) tölteni az Európai Unió Relate Projektjének keretében. A lehetőséget szeretném megtámogatni azzal, hogy igyekszem nem csak hivatalból hanem saját blogomon is dokumentálni az egy hét történéseit, érdekességeit, tanulságait.

A projektben részt vevők többek közt Svájc, Spanyolország, Belgium és Törökország kutatólaborjaiba látogathatnak, a kiválasztottak közül 8-an Rómába utazunk. Február 28-a és március 6-a között a nap nagy részét a kutatóközpont laboratóriumában fogjuk tölteni, megfigyeléssel, interjúkészítéssel, dokumentálással és rácsodálkozással, hogy hogyan is művelik Igazi Tudósok a Tudományt. Emellett másodlagos cél anyaggyűjtés a szakdolgozathoz, kutatási tervhez és természetesen tények és tévhitek tesztelése az olasz kávékról. A twittelés/csiripelés #tanulmanyut – alatt kovethető lesz, képek és ha minden összejön, videók is elérhetőek lesznek.
